In addition, the cost to wet clean garments is lower than traditional dry cleaning methods. While it does produce some wastewater, it is the most energy-efficient method.

Since the dawn of dry cleaning, people have been accepting the use of the harmful chemicals traditionally used to clean clothing.

Dry cleaning has existed, in some form or another, for thousands of years. Original methods used by the Romans included the use of lye, ammonia, and a type of clay called fuller’s earth. As time progressed, however, so did fashion. As common wardrobes became more extensive and elaborate, the need for a better method of cleaning them arose. Eco-friendly dry cleaning methods progressed and chemicals changed as the need for sustainable dry cleaning services only grew with time.

The most commonly used chemical in archaic methods of dry cleaning is called perchloroethylene, or perc for short. Popularized in the late 1930s, perc came into abundant use as the previously preferred solution of petroleum solvents diminished due to World War II. While it seemed like the perfect cleaning solution as it proved to have unmatchable cleaning power on all fabrics and wasn’t flammable, perc is a toxic sludge. Its capabilities made it the ideal option for decades—until now.
